The Lalande-de-Pomerol AOC
is a commune appellation in the Bordeaux wine region located about fifty kilometres east of Bordeaux, just north of Libourne. The vineyards are laid out on successive terraces and extend over two communes: Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The appellation is separated from neighbouring Pomerol by the Barbanne river. The Lalande-de-Pomerol vineyard area covers 1,130 hectares, permItting an annual production of about 50,000 hectolitres of wine.
The vines in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation grown in a terroir where the soil is a mixture of clay (very deep in some parts), gravel and even some sand in the western part, near the Barbanne river. The nature of the terrain is perfectly suited to the Merlot, which represents the majority of the plantings.
The Lalande de Pomerol wine appellation produces only red wines, the vast majority of which are made from the Merlot, usually blended with Cabernet Franc and smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The wines from Lalande de Pomerol display a dark ruby-garnet hue, are very expressive, with distinctive red berry aromas (red currants, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, etc.) and overtones of vanilla, toast and spices. The wine is always clean on entry, solid, meaty and broad on the palate, where the pronounced (yet never hard) tannins turn silky. The wines from Lalande-de-Pomerol have an ageing capacity of 10 years or more.
The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation includes some very pleasant surprises such as the wines from Château Moulin La Gravière, Château La Fleur de Boüard and Etablissements Thunevin.
