Located in the town of Aÿ, Champagne Deutz
was founded in 1838 by William Deutz, a Champagne salesman, and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, a négociant. These young entrepreneurs, natives of Aix-la-Chapelle in Napoleonic Prussia, were attracted by the prosperity that prevailed in France under the reign of Louis-Philippe I. Their négociant operation of purchased bottles that they disgorged, dosed, and labeled themselves flourished, and their sales increased regularly over the years. In the late 1860s they passed the company to their respective sons, René Deutz and Alfred Geldermann.
Today, the past and the present live together in harmony at Champagne Deutz, marrying tradition and modern management techniques. Endlessly seeking to improve the technical methods put in place by their predecessors, the current management maintains and reinforces their relationships with their vigneron (winegrower) partners, visiting them at the presses and ensuring that they always employ the practices that create wines with the distinctive, elegant Deutz personality.
