Wine of Barbera d'Alba appellation
The Barbera d'Alba DOC is an Italian designation in the Piedmont region, recognized as a DOC since 27 May 1970. Only red wines harvested within the production area specified by the decree are entitled to the Barbera d’Alba DOC. The authorized vineyards are located in the province of Cuneo. The approximately 2,500 hectares of Barbera d'Alba vineyards permit an annual production of about 44,000 hectoliters.

The specifications for Barbera red wine are less demanding than those for the Barbera d'Alba “Superiore”, mainly with regard to ageing and alcohol content. It is generally ruby red in colour with garnet tints. It shows a typical, intense vinous nose, and is powerful and slightly tannic on the palate.
Barbera d'Alba wine can age 5-7 years and is close in quality to that of Barolo. In Italy, Barbera d'Alba is considered to be one of the best designations produced from the Barbera varietal. The wines from producers such Renato Ratti and Ornella Corregia certainly appear to confirm this reputation.
