appellation is located in the Languedoc region, between the Mediterranean and the Corbières massif. The area of the Fitou AOC, set out in 1948, is not very extensive and spans only nine communes in the Aude département. The winemaking tradition dates back to antiquity, but the vineyards that we see today were heavily impacted by the crises of the 19th century and the Languedoc wine revolts of 1907.
The terroir of Fitou features a wide variety of soils and landscapes, which is reflected in the wines it produces. In fact, in the last 15 years, considerable research has been invested in the study of the soils, which has resulted in a better adaptation of the grape varieties planted to their geological and climatic environment.
The red wines of Fitou are mainly produced from a blend of Carignan (probably the appellation's most characteristic grape variety), Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. The Mediterranean-type climate and sunshine enable these grape varieties to fully express their wealth of aromas. Wine lovers will appreciate the red wines produced by Domaine Bertrand-Bergé, Château Les Fenals and Domaine Bories.
