is the worthy descendant of an illustrious family of wine merchants. In the late 1980s he took a decisive new path, creating Domaine de la Moussière
in the village of Sancerre. Passionate and curious, he quickly made it one of the appellation's leading producers, with fresh, refined, perfectly executed wines like La Moussière, Génération, Grands-Champs, and La Demoiselle.
This property of about 50 hectares (124 acres) is now run jointly by father and son, the seventeenth and eighteenth generations to carry the name Alphonse Mellot. This brilliant team will spare no effort: the vineyards are worked organically and biodynamically; the manual harvest is done at optimal maturity; yields are restricted; vinifications are precise and rigorous. Since 2005 the younger Alphonse has also run Domaine des Pénitents, a Coteaux Charitois Vin de Pays estate 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the family base. The 18 hectares (44 acres) of vineyards here, which are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sit on crinoidal limestone, face full south, and are worked according to the same high-quality criteria. The resulting wines are every bit as good as those of the main estate.
