The Fronton AOC
is a regional appellation located in the départements of Haute-Garonne, Tarn and La Garonne, between Toulouse and Montauban. The Fronton vineyards cover an area of 2,400 hectares.
The vines for the wine of Fronton grow in various soils: “boulbènes” which are alluvial deposits (pebbles, gravel, sand and silt) from the Massif Central regions, drained by the Tarn River and its tributaries, and are characterized by a high silica content and the absence of limestone; “les rougets”, clay-loam soils which contain up to 30% clay; and gravel made up of stones and gravel on the surface with clay lying deep below.
The wines of Fronton are unique as they boast a main grape variety that they refer to a "worldwide exclusive": the Negrette, which today is only grown in the Fronton wine region. A prestigious grape variety, the Negrette gives Fronton wines their aromas and structure. The varietal has probably been abandoned elsewhere due to its particularly capricious nature. The Negrette tradition is preserved to this day, thanks to the quality of the terroir and the obstinacy and perseverance of the Fronton wine producers. Fronton wines are therefore exclusively red or rosé, and Domaine Le Roc produces some excellent examples.
