was founded in 1995 by Luis Cañas (who also owns an eponymous estate) as an homage to his mother, Angeles. Bodegas Amaren embodies the quest for perfection in every regard: in the vineyards, sorting grapes, preparing the fruit, and helping it develop into the greatest possible wines that will give maximum pleasure.
The vineyards of Bodegas Amaren, which are mostly terraced, are located in Villabuena, in the southern part of the province of Álava, where they are protected from the north by the imposing presence of the Sierra Cantabria. This part of Rioja unites the best conditions for growing high-quality grapes. The property covers 22 hectares (54 acres) planted to vines over 60 years old and another 30 hectares (74 acres) with vines between 30 and 60 years of age.
The greatest care is taken in the vineyard work, and at harvest time the grapes are manually collected into small crates. The winery equipment is state of the art, with small stainless steel or wood vats used for the fermentation, depending on the circumstances. The wines of Bodegas Amaren are matured in new barrels made from only the best new French and American oak.
