belongs to a Frenchman who has spent the last ten years reinventing Rioja ! Tom Puyaubert, a full-blooded Gascon, set his suitcases down in the village of Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja, and founded his estate there. He had learned to make wine while working for top coopers (Demptos, Saury…), where he interacted with some of Spain's greatest oenologists.
Tom Puyaubert made his first wine at Rockbridge Vineyard in Virginia, alongside Sheperd Rouse, before taking work as an oenologist in Bordeaux. He values respect, harmony, patience, and tranquillity above all else. The vines of Bodega Exopto
are located in the villages of Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa) and Abalos (Rioja Alta), and in Rioja Baja. The vines range from 20 to 90 years of age. The plots in Rioja Alavesa sit on clay-limestone soils that bring power, structure, and color to the wines, while the soils of Rioja Alta give minerality and fruit. Blending the two results in rich, harmonious wines.
The unique character of Tom's wines is also due to the systematic blending of three varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano, and Grenache. The wines of Bodega Exopto reflect all the force and richness of Rioja, with a Bordeaux-style approach to blending that brings finesse and elegance. Robert Parker rightly declared all three new cuvees from Bodega Exopto to be extraordinary. The estate's BB (Big Bang) has an amazing quality-price ratio.
