AOC was recognized by decree of 29 May 1936. It covers four communes in the Jura département: Château-Chalon, Domblans, Menetru-le-Vignoble and Nevy-sur-Seille.
The Château-Chalon wine producing area spans 50 hectares and lies on the blue marl of deep Lias covered with limestone scree. The vines are often planted on steep slopes protected by limestone cliffs. The climate is semi-continental with marked seasons and harsh winters.
Château-Chalon wine is exclusively “vin jaune” (yellow wine) made exclusively from the Savagnin grape variety. The Château-Chalon appellation produces excellent, very rich, very powerful, gold-coloured wines which age very well, sometimes up to several centuries. This is a vineyard of true quality where controls are even more numerous than in other appellations. Since 1958, the Château-Chalon wine AOC control commission visits the vineyards just before the harvest each year to check whether the grapes possess all the quality characteristics required to produce a vin jaune worthy of the name. The exceptional Château-Chalon wine produced by Domaine Jean Macle perfectly defends the reputation of this appellation.
