Famous for their rosés, the vineyards of Provence–Côte d’Azur also produce a large selection of equally exceptional red and white wines. The Alpilles IGP
wines enjoy a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, sometimes very hot, summers with temperatures as high as 40°C. Rainfall is erratic and often comes in the form of violent storms. The Mistral wind, which blows very strongly in the region, has a beneficial influence on the vine. The Alpilles IGP
, which stretches along the coast or winds through the valleys of the hinterland, offers a superb and very diverse backdrop for the production of wine.
As in all the Mediterranean vineyards, there is a mixture of grape varieties planted within the Alpilles IGP. For the Alpilles IGP red wines, the Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Counoise are used. For the Alpilles IGP white, the wine growers plant mainly Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc and Rolle. There are also the Muscat à Petits Grains, Chasan, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. Special mention should be made of the Alpilles IGP wines produced by Domaine de Trévallon.
