wine producing area spans both sides of the Ardèche gorges on the Gras plateau, at 250 metres altitude. The appellation area covers the territory of 14 communes, of which 9 are located in the département of Ardeche and 5 are in the Gard.
The grape varieties permitted for the Côtes-du-Vivarais AOC are Grenache and Syrah for the red wines, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault for the rosés, and Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Marsanne for the whites. The red AOC wines boast black fruit aromas and spices, fairly robust tannins and lovely freshness. They inherit their character from the Grenache which provides structure and their spiciness from the Syrah. The wines come in an array of different colours (deep red, purple red) and aromas. The fresh rosés, from the same grape varieties as the reds, possess sustained colour and aromas, due to the inclusion of Grenache in the blend. The Marsanne and Grenache grape varieties impart a surprising minerality and freshness to the appellation’s white wines.
