Denominación de Origen is located northeast of the province of Leon. The Bierzo DO, which was awarded in 1989, covers vineyards in 22 districts. The vineyards now span an area of approximately 6,500 hectares. The Bierzo production area is split between the numerous small valleys of the mountainous area (Alto Bierzo), and the wide plain (Bajo Bierzo).
The Bierzo vineyards grow in soil made up of a mixture of quartz and schist, and enjoy a warm, dry climate characteristic of the region. The low altitude prevents late frosts and promotes the early ripening of the grapes. Due to these local characteristics the vine thrives here. The quality of the terroir of the Bierzo wines is perfectly expressed in the wines produced by Bodega Mengoba and Bodegas de Cacabelos.
Bierzo wines have to meet strict production regulations. The Bierzo red wines are mainly from the Mencia and Garnacha Tintorera grape varieties. The Bierzo white wines are made from the Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino varieties.
