Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2021 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)

About the estate:

The Merlaut family is committed to improving the wines from this fairly large vineyard, located near the Saint-Julien appellations. Here, the focus is not on producing showy samples, but on ensuring consistency and uniformity in the quality of the wine produced. The arrival of a new and talented director has brought greater rigor and precision to the production of a quintessential Médoc wine with character—one that is somewhat austere and reserved when released as en primeur, but gradually reveals notes of cedar and spices. Therefore, opt for the most recent vintages.

Rated estate (2022 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Camensac, acquired in 2005 by the Merlaut family, is now managed by the Chasse-Spleen team, led by Céline Villars-Foubet and Jean-Pierre Foubet. Recent investments have equipped the estate with the resources needed to rise to the challenge. In fact, over the past few vintages, progress has been substantial, and Camensac is among the wines that enthusiasts should keep a close eye on, especially since prices remain very reasonable—a fact we welcome.
