"The nose is marked by black cherry, licorice, flowers and truffle. The wine is medium-bodied, with a lush, polished, silky and fresh palate that perfectly suits all its ripe, pure and energetic red fruits and spices. This wine really came into its own during barrel ageing. In fact, it's on par with older vintages from the '40s and '50s." Bettane & Desseauve
Rated wine 92-93/100
Domaine rated (2020 guide) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the domain :
Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol wine syndicate, also owns Clos René. This estate is located on a 12-hectare sandy-clay terroir, with iron dross in the subsoil. Discreet and elegant, it always proves its worth with age, as the 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec assert themselves and add complexity over the years. Seemingly puny in its youth, clos-rené evolves with distinction and its tannin becomes slender and refined. A bargain for lovers of fine wines. Cellar for at least ten years.

About the domain :
Jean-Marie Garde farms two neighbouring Pomerol crus, with similar terroir and grape varieties (and an original presence of Malbec): Clos René, an old family estate known in the 18th century as "Reney", and Moulinet-Lasserre, complemented by a Lalande vineyard (La Mission).

Wine rated (2023 guide) 94/100
Rated domain (guide 2022) Recommended
About the wine:
Clos René 2020 has become a powerful, structured wine, much more so than it was in barrel. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and licorice are all amplified. This deep, powerful Pomerol needs time to mellow, that's for sure. 2025-2040
James Suckling
Wine rated (2023 guide) 93/100
About the wine:
Beautiful aromas of blackberry with a hint of fresh mushroom and wild flowers. Full-bodied with fine tannins that give the wine concentration and structure. Fresh and vibrant on the finish. Very fine structure here. Very typical. Try after 2027.
Terre de Vins
Wine rated (2021 guide) 93/100
About the wine:
Beautiful, full-bodied fruit, straightforward, immediately likeable, ripe without excess, with well-integrated breeding. Good density on the palate, fleshy, digestible and marked by fine bitters.

Anthocyanes - Yohan Castaing
Wine rated (2021 guide) 93-95/100
About the wine:
Beautiful nose of graphite, liquorice, slightly smoky and fresh. Elegantly full-bodied, mellow and well-placed on the palate, with volume and, above all, freshness. Beautiful tannins, structuring without being firm. Good potential for a property that validates the efforts of previous years.
