Berthet-Bondet - Château Chalon 2002

Berthet-Bondet - Château Chalon 2002

Rating: RVF 17/20, Bettane & Desseauve 17/20, Gault Millau 16/20
“The Château-Chalon 2002 is subtle; the yellow flavor is well-balanced, making it a vin jaune that doesn’t overwhelm the palate: the whole remains elegant, with a lovely hint of curry on the finish. ” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2010 – RVF). Produced from the appellation’s finest vineyards—Gaillardon, Beaumont, and Sous-Roche—this vin jaune beautifully expresses the finesse and character of Savagnin on this great terroir. This exceptional 2002 vintage makes it a truly unique wine!

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

The estate overlooks the entire town of Château-Chalon, perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 450 meters. Jean has passed the torch to his daughter Hélène, who returned to take over the business after a career as a translator in Brussels, and now oversees the smooth operation of the 15-hectare vineyard. Certified organic since 2013, the wines are among the vineyard’s greatest successes, particularly the voile wines, the estate’s signature specialty. The yellow wines (4.5 hectares in Château-Chalon) are aged in magnificent vaulted cellars.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Chantal and Jean Berthet-Bondet, both agricultural engineers, left the city in 1985 to establish this 11-hectare estate, located equally within the Château-Chalon and Côtes du Jura appellations, and certified organic since 2013. Hélène, Jean’s daughter, is now at the helm. The quality is evolving toward greater expression and purity of the fruit. New cuvées and labels for fortified wines have been thoughtfully redefined, though the cuvées aged under a veil remain the estate’s undisputed stars, with a Château-Chalon that serves as a model for the prestigious appellation.
