Notes: RVF 18 /20
“Even more mellow and deep, the Clos de la Simonette reveals subtle notes of cinnamon and sweet spices, with a firm and dense structure, in a restrained and distinguished profile with exceptional length. A great wine in the making.” (Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2011 - RVF)

Clos de la Simonette

Vintage

2008

Designation

Saint-Chinian

Region

Languedoc

Grape varieties

70% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache

Regions

The Grenache comes from the Simonette vineyard, which has very stony, well-drained soil; the Mourvèdre vines are planted at an altitude of 250 meters on steep, terraced slopes with particularly good exposure

Viticulture

The vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices, with a strong emphasis on organic products: grape pomace compost, manure, grass cover, and weed control on the terraces and steep slopes.

Grape Harvest

manual

Winemaking

The Grenache undergoes cold maceration for a few days before fermentation begins naturally. Maceration lasts 4 to 5 weeks.

Livestock farming

Aged on the lees in demi-muids for 18 months: 20% new demi-muids for part of the Mourvèdre, 80% demi-muids that have held one or more vintages

Eye

deep, dark color

Palate

Both concentrated and elegant, with a delicate texture and freshness, the wine’s structure—characterized by dense body, length, and good acidity—makes this an interesting vintage for aging.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2024 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable production, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Isabelle and Mathieu Champart built their estate from the ground up in 1976 and have made it a hallmark of quality, as year after year, everything produced there remains excellent. The apparent simplicity of these under-the-radar wines was matched only by the length and complexity of their finishes. The estate has changed hands; Pascaline Bour, a relative of the Mulliez family, has taken it over. We look forward to the wines produced by the new team and hope they will continue an incredible string of great successes in an appellation that, curiously, suffers from a lack of recognition.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the estate:

A magnificent landscape, terraced vineyards, a hillside farmhouse, and a very stony, clay-limestone terroir. Since 1976, Isabelle and Matthieu Champart have been cultivating 13 hectares of vineyards (80% of which are organic) in this picture-perfect setting, with an organic approach that predates the official conversion process begun in 2019. They have been making their own wine since 1988, the year they left the cooperative.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Fans of the Champart couple—both recently retired—can rest assured: the estate remains in top form, true to the spirit of its founders! Nicolas Gaignon continues to bring these beautiful vintages to life, rooted in clay-limestone soil. The 16-hectare estate, situated on the limestone folds overlooking the town of Saint-Chinian, began its transition to organic farming in 2019. Here, the wines are equally suited for immediate enjoyment and for long-term aging.

A poorly aged, heavy wine with unpleasant bitter notes: just as uninteresting as the other wine from the same estate. The journalists who praise this estate to the skies would do well to reconsider their opinions.
