“The 2008 vintage’s fruity finesse shines through in tight, velvety textures that are increasingly delicate and ‘Pinot-like’ in the Clos Guillot. ” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France - RVF). A Chinon that owes its pronounced minerality to the presence of tuffeau limestone, allowing fresh red fruit to shine through, supported by lovely acidity. One of the estate’s finest vintages!

Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2011 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide): 3 stars (High-quality production, setting the standard in its sector)
About the wine:
The nose is complex, fresh, and intense. Its fresh palate makes it tempting to drink right away, even though it has aging potential.
About the estate:
Mathieu Baudry has truly come to appreciate this exemplary estate in Cravant, which also cultivates black Melanosporum truffles. His father, Bernard, continues to lend his support both in the vineyard and in the cellar. They have built their reputation on age-worthy Cabernet Francs—vibrant, dense, and long-finishing—at an estate that includes 30 hectares farmed organically. The vintages are named after the terroirs that produce them, with prices that remain accessible. Les-Granges blends grapes from gravel and clay soils to produce a supple, fresh wine; Les-Grézeaux, grown on siliceous clay, offers beautiful finesse and a structure that allows the wine to age well. Deeper in character, La-Croix-Boissée offers a wine with a tannic core derived from the clay-limestone soils. The vines of Clos Guillot produce a full-bodied, smooth, and rich wine, made for long-term aging. A superb estate that has produced an excellent 2019 vintage.

About the wine:
Leather notes join blackberry on the nose of the 2008 Chinon Clos Guillot, with a firm yet refreshing palate featuring aromas of artichoke and green tea. A briny character emerges in a lingering finish with real energy.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Wine rated (2011 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)
Rated estate (2026 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often boasting fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the wine:
The 2008 vintage’s fruity finesse shines through in the Clos Guillot’s tight, velvety textures, which are increasingly delicate and distinctly Pinot-like.
About the estate:
Bernard Baudry seeks to capture the silky, refined character of Chinon wines while remaining true to their terroir. This approach, which he pursues alongside his son Matthieu, is complemented by organic certification and has inspired them to plant ungrafted vines—grown from rootstock for the past 10 years (following Charles Joguet’s plantings in the 1980s)—as well as to establish vineyards on forgotten terroirs, such as the excellent Clos Guillot. La Croix Boissée (a clay-limestone terroir in Cravant-les-Coteaux), built for aging, possesses an extra touch of velvety smoothness and sometimes sweetness in hot vintages, which could delight Saint-Émilion enthusiasts. This cuvée naturally takes the lead among Touraine’s great reds; be mindful, however, of the animal notes found in certain vintages.

For fans of crisp, taut Chinon. For more depth, check out Philippe Alliet’s Coteau de Noiré (though I haven’t tasted the oaked version from Baudry).

Bernard Baudry, along with Philippe Alliet, is the top winemaker in Chinon. His Clos Guillot offers the best value for money. It’s a wine with aging potential that can be enjoyed right now. Note, however, that 2008 was a very small vintage.

A huge disappointment; several bottles have been opened; it seems completely outdated

Light red and black berries, smoky notes, supple tannins, but the acidity is still quite pronounced. It paired well with a monkfish roast wrapped in smoked bacon, served with steamed peas and chanterelle mushrooms, but would certainly have benefited from a few more years of aging.

Review by Mr. ELIE M. Published on May 25, 2013
This is a superb wine—straightforward, pure, and unpretentious. It has a lovely freshness and acidity that make it perfectly easy to drink and approachable. I love this light, balanced, refined style, without a hint of heaviness. Everything is in perfect balance. It’s actually a perfect reflection of its native region. It seems to me, however, that like many great Cabernets from the Loire Valley, it hides tremendous aging potential that will delight those wise enough to resist its youthful allure.
