"A Chinon of superb quality, with remarkable aging potential!"

"The Chinon Les Grézeaux 2022 has a restrained bouquet of peony, iris, carnation, violet, and black fruit, followed by a taut, elegant, and juicy palate with a chalky texture and a long, penetrating finish despite some structured and firm tannins." (Robert Parker 2024).

Wine rated (2025 guide) 90/100

Rated estate (2025 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Mathieu Baudry has taken full advantage of this exemplary estate in Cravant, which also grows black Melanosporum truffles. His father Bernard continues to support him in the vineyard and the cellar. They have built their reputation on Cabernet Franc wines that are suitable for aging, sappy, dense, and long-lasting, on an estate that covers 30 hectares cultivated organically. The cuvées are named after the terroirs that produce them and are still affordable. Les-granges blends grapes from gravelly and clay soils to produce a supple and fresh wine, while les-grézeaux, grown on clay-siliceous soils, has a beautiful finesse and structure that allows the wine to age well. Deeper, La-Croix-Boissée offers a wine with a tannic heart brought by the clay-limestone soils. The vines of Clos Guillot produce a fleshy, smooth and full-bodied wine, tailor-made for long aging. A superb address that has produced a very successful 2019 vintage.

Rated estate (2025 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

Bernard Baudry seeks to capture the silky, refined character of Chinon wines, while remaining as faithful as possible to their terroir. This approach, which he pursues with his son Matthieu, is complemented by organic certification and has inspired them to plant ungrafted vines, which have been growing freely for 10 years (following Charles Joguet's plantings in the 1980s), as well as to establish vineyards on forgotten terroirs, such as the excellent Clos Guillot. La Croix Boissée (clay-limestone terroir of Cravant-les-Coteaux), built for aging, has an extra velvety texture and sometimes sweetness in hot years, which could delight Saint-Émilion lovers. This cuvée naturally takes the lead among the great reds of Touraine; however, beware of the animality found in certain cuvées.
