Château Bellerive - Quarts de Chaume 2005

Gault & Millau
“The balance and freshness have been preserved, resulting in this surprisingly inspired bottle, with aromas more reminiscent of Bonnezeaux than Quarts-de-Chaume, which are evolving perfectly.” (Le Grand Guide des Vins de France 2011 – Bettane & Desseauve). Nothing is lacking in this exceptional 2005 vintage, vinified with the assistance of the talented oenologist and professor Denis Dubourdieu. Already great and more than promising, this wine concentrates aromatic complexity, richness, and power, while retaining balance and freshness. An incredible vintage full of panache and with excellent aging potential!

Wine rated (2011 guide) 16,5/20 (Reference wine)
Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the wine:
The balance and freshness have been preserved, resulting in this surprisingly inspired wine—with aromas more reminiscent of Bonnezeaux than Quarts-de-Chaume—that is aging beautifully.
About the estate:
A wine enthusiast, Alain Château is a passionate connoisseur of terroirs. Since 2005, he has built up an impressive portfolio of vineyards in the Bordeaux region and the Loire Valley, where he owns three estates: Château de Varennes (7 hectares in Savennières), Château de la Guimonière (19 hectares in Coteaux-du-Layon, Chaume, Anjou, and Cabernet d’Anjou—including 16 hectares of Chenin), and Château Bellerive, located in the heart of the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation on the left bank of the Loire. The sweet wines combine power, elegance, and freshness and hold their own within their respective appellations. We did not taste the reds.

About the estate:
Alain Château, an industrialist with a passion for wine, took over this historic Quarts-de-Chaume vineyard in 2004. He enlisted Denis Dubourdieu, a renowned Bordeaux oenologist who also owns a Sauternes cru classé, as his advisor. With its dazzling golden hue, this cuvée combines the sweetness of quince and honey with aromas of candied fruit in its bouquet. Sweet, fresh, and rich, the palate finishes with very pleasant, warm notes. Don’t wait to discover it.

A truly beautiful wine, all finesse and elegance. Its full character emerges gradually. It is better enjoyed in 2017 than in 2015! By 2020, the color has developed nicely into a golden hue.

A sweet blend of exotic fruits (mango, pineapple). I opened one out of sheer indulgence; the others will age for a few more years.

Disappointing—this bottle lacks vibrancy; it’s a bit flat and lackluster. It does, however, have a lovely, sweet richness.

A full-bodied, powerful wine that is still very young but beautifully balanced thanks to its lovely acidity. Must be allowed to breathe. Aromas of quince compote and caramelized apples. Pair with sliced foie gras, blue-veined pasta, or tarte tatin. Superb!

A beautiful and expensive bottle. An excellent, fully matured expression of Chenin.
