Notes: RVF 16.5/20, Bettane & Desseauve 16/20
“Across all three varieties, the Baron G cuvée is of an excellent standard. Very Chardonnay-like, with slightly buttery aromas, the 2011 white is aromatic and full-bodied. Delicate notes of candied lemon mark the attack on the palate with pleasant acidity, lending freshness to the finish. Notes of menthol, strawberry soup, and fresh basil powerfully express the uniqueness of the Braquet grape.” (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2014 - RVF)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)
About the estate:
Located on the Séoules hill, on the outskirts of Nice at an altitude of nearly 300 meters, the terraced vineyard benefits from sea breezes that temper the summer heat. After producing 47 vintages and establishing the renown and reputation of the Bellet appellation, Ghislain de Charnacé sold his 12-hectare vineyard in 2014 to the real estate management company La Française REM (which owns other vineyards). Considerable resources have been invested to restructure the vineyard, under the leadership, since the summer of 2018, of Jean de Laître, a talented master winemaker also active in the Bordeaux region. An ultra-functional winery at the foot of the old chapel now allows for winemaking that is closely attuned to the terroir. A new style is emerging, with a reorganization of the portfolio into three tiers (entry-level wines, terroir wines, and exceptional “agnès” cuvées), promising a bright future for this historic estate. The latest vintages reflect this positive shift.

Very disappointing. No aroma, little flavor on the palate, flat, and lacking in finish.

This wine, which I hadn’t tried before, pleasantly surprised me. Quite full-bodied and, above all, elegant, the 2011 Baron G reveals expertly balanced flavors of lemon and grapefruit on the palate, along with a certain lightness. A good choice to pair with a slice of Sicilian-style swordfish (with caper sauce). However, this bottle seems relatively expensive to me. Also, in the same price range (around €20), I would prefer a Clos Mireille Blanc de Blancs 2013 from Maison OTT, or even a Sancerre from Alphonse MELLOT, Cuvée la Moussière 2012

Refined, elegant, with a lovely texture on the palate—it paired perfectly with the seared scallops prepared in a Japanese style… A wonderful discovery.

This wine is good, but it sorely lacks depth.

A white wine that should be cellared to reach its peak; a great white wine from Provence; Excellent value for money

A wine that’s far too underrated, beautifully crafted from some rather rare grape varieties. For lovers of exceptional, distinctive white wines.
