Domaine de la Janasse - Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin 2009
Rating: Robert Parker 98/100, Gault Millau 16.5/20 (Coup de Coeur), RVF 16.5/20, Bettane & Desseauve 16.5/20
“One of my favorites was already this 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin (which is still aged in 600-liter foudres and demi-muids), and it has really filled out since I tasted it last year. An absolutely magnificent wine, which gains another 4 points this year—and it’s unusual for me to vary my score so much from one tasting to the next. With an alcohol content of 15%, this deep purple wine possesses a noble sweetness and an extraordinary concentration of lavender, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and minerality. Full-bodied, with silky tannins, a velvety and enveloping texture, a voluptuous palate, and a magnificent finish, this wine is outrageously delicious and a phenomenal expression of old Grenache vines.” (Wine Advocate October 2011 - Robert Parker)

Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2024 guide): 4* Stars (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Located on the finest terroirs of Courthézon, the Domaine de la Janasse—the pride of the Sabon family—has established itself for over 40 years as one of the appellation’s leading producers. Christophe Sabon produces Côtes-du-Rhône wines of the highest caliber, with a rare depth. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are expressed through various cuvées: Chaupin, from a cool terroir with a distinctly Burgundian character, or the Vieilles-Vignes cuvée, which is sunnier and more refined. Finally, the whites, though often overshadowed by the reds, are equally highly recommended. The entire range is impeccable, and the top cuvées rank among the appellation’s finest.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer’s wines regularly receive awards from the guide)
About the estate:
A regular in the Guide, often highly rated for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône, and IGP wines. A 90-hectare vineyard spread across numerous plots, managed by Christophe Sabon and his sister Isabelle, the children of Aimé Sabon, who founded the estate in 1973. The estate was expanded in 2015 with the purchase of Clos Saint-Antonin and its 15 hectares of vineyards in the town of Jonquières.

RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)
About the estate:
This large estate, which has been in the Sabon family for generations, ranks among the elite of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are primarily located in the commune of Courthézon, with a variety of plots and soil types reflected in the different vintages. The estate also produces splendid (and high-volume) Côtes-du-Rhône cuvées from vineyards adjacent to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. With often very high levels of ripeness, the wines are opulent in style, sometimes a bit too warm in sunny vintages. On the other hand, the tannins and textures are always of great finesse. In recent vintages, the wines have been less focused on richness and are slightly more approachable.
