“With added depth, the 2009 Côte Rôtie Brune et Blonde is rich with blackcurrant, burnt earth, and chocolate, complementing the more classic notes of dried meat, minerality, and violet that emerge with aeration. Full-bodied, sublimely pure, and with a fruity structure, it will be sensational over the next decade. ” (Wine Advocate 2014 - Robert Parker)

Wine rated 17.5/20 (Top-rated wine)

Rated (2023 Guide) 5*Stars (Exceptional producers who represent the absolute pinnacle of quality in France and around the world)

About the wine:

The evolution of this vintage is remarkable, despite its impressive production volume of 300,000 bottles. It captures the elegance of blends from thirty years ago, with greater precision and aromatic purity. The epitome of the appellation: only a great blend can evoke this sensation.

About the estate:

Marcel and Philippe Guigal jointly run the successful family business, which since 2017 has expanded significantly in the south, to Châteauneuf-du-Pape (77 hectares of estate-owned vineyards), supplemented in the spring of 2022 by the 100 hectares of Château d’Aquéria. And, as always, the rich portfolio of vineyards in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. Wine lovers can enjoy some of the valley’s greatest vintages, not to mention the brilliant Côtes-du-Rhône in all three red, white, and rosé varieties, and Tavel, Philippe’s favorite wine.

About the estate:

In addition to its “treasures” in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu, the Guigal estate owns two beautiful plots in Saint-Joseph: the locality known as “Saint-Joseph,” which gave its name to the appellation, and the Vignes de l’Hospice, planted on a very steep granite hillside, already identified by the monks of the Hospice de Tournon and featuring a geological formation similar to that of the famous Bessards hill in Hermitage.

5-Star Rated Estate (Outstanding Production)

About the estate:

An iconic figure of the Northern Rhône, Marcel Guigal is both a major wine merchant and a prominent winegrower. In the latter capacity, he cultivates famous vineyards in Côte Rôtie, such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne, not to mention La Doriane in Condrieu. A tireless worker with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, he succeeded his father, Etienne. Philippe Guigal, an oenologist and representative of the third generation, continues the family legacy alongside his father, maintaining this dual focus on estate-owned vineyards and wine trading. The winemaking for the northern appellations all takes place in Ampuis.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2*Stars (These exceptional estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves that, thanks to the consistency and excellence of their wines, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers)

About the estate:

The most iconic winery in the northern Rhône Valley needs no introduction. Under this umbrella, we bring together the wines from our own vineyards, which we thus distinguish from our wine merchant operations. This includes the famous Côte-Rôtie trio: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne; the first two are brand names, while the last is a registered terroir. Added to these are the Château d’Ampuis cuvée and the Condrieu La Doriane. In addition to these star wines, there is the Vignes de l’Hospice cuvée, a Saint-Joseph situated on a magnificent terroir, as well as several large plots in Hermitage from which the Ex-Voto cuvée is produced. Marcel Guigal is strongly supported by his son Philippe, who seems to be gently shifting the style of the wines, with aging that strikes us as slightly less dominant. Needless to say, all these wines are built for long-term aging.

Opened after three years of aging in the cellar. It’s certainly good—very good, in fact—but I was still expecting more from a wine at this price point! After their Cotes du Rhone, I’m a bit disappointed with Guigal!

Review by Mr. THIERRY V. Published on June 19, 2016

The color is of medium intensity, ruby red, and perfectly clear. The nose is pronounced and then becomes rich, featuring red fruits, spices, and a pleasant floral note (violet); a few subtle animal notes take a back seat, giving way to the fruit at this stage. The nose is slightly alcoholic, though a hint of freshness tries to mask it. The palate is a superb combination of finesse and power. The overall impression is elegant. Beautiful craftsmanship. The tannins are indeed of a rare finesse for a wine offering such lovely, rather round body. Admittedly, the alcohol hinted at by the nose is definitely present (which is a bit of a shame), but the wine remains balanced overall. The finish brings, on the aftertaste, a hint of licorice, as if to awaken a palate already delighted. The second bottle will age in the cellar, awaiting the tertiary notes that should add complexity. As it stands, the group is having a wonderful time with this wine, which is undoubtedly falling short of what professional critics promise. It does what it needs to do to justify its price (32.90 euros on 1jour1vin), nothing more. It nevertheless earns a spot on the blog (http://escapadoenophile.com/), which is demanding when certain price points are reached (and many fail to meet a reasonable pleasure-to-price ratio).

Not very interesting; the wine is dominated by harsh, alcoholic notes and lacks the character of a Côte Rôtie.

Very good, just as expected, with no (unpleasant) surprises. The 2010 is slightly better, in my opinion.

It is always a great pleasure to taste Guigal’s Côte-Rôtie wines. The delicate nose of candied fruit, red berries, and figs heralds a palate of great smoothness, thanks to its powerful, perfectly integrated tannins. This wine already seems mature and ready to drink, but the nobility of its terroir suggests it will age well. I can’t wait for 2016, when the next tasting is scheduled.
