Rating: Robert Parker 90/100, RVF 16.5/20, Bettane & Desseauve 16.5/20, Guide Hachette 1* (Very successful wine)
“The 2009 Gigondas offers a magnificent bouquet; it is spicy, with soft fruit, and no notes of candied fruit; the palate is dense and graceful; a complete wine that remains consistently excellent.” (The Guide to the Best Wines of France 2012 - RVF)

Bettane & Desseauve
4-Star Estate (Producers of the very highest quality, the pride of French viticulture)
About the estate:
Dominique Ay is Gigondas’s “wise old man” in the noblest sense of the term. A distinguished president of the appellation for many years, he is one of the leading figures of the Southern Rhône. With his deep understanding of Grenache, he brings out the full character of the clay-limestone soils of the Parties terroir. The aging process then takes on its full meaning, as the wines are refined in large oak casks for a minimum of 24 months. His children have now taken up the torch, with Anne-Sophie in charge of sales and Christophe overseeing the winery and vineyard—no small feat! With a timeless style, the estate’s sole wine is known for its longevity. Very powerful and structured—even firm in its youth—it develops a silky texture and perfect balance. The 2016, tasted straight from the tank, should produce a truly exceptional bottle…
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated estate (2024 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)
About the estate:
The estate’s wine is the quintessential example of a fine Gigondas: full-bodied, robust, and unpretentious. With a firm, dense structure, the best vintages require four to five years of aging to fully open up. From that point on, they develop beautiful complexity over time and continue to improve for ten to twenty years.

The color has barely evolved, suggesting this wine has significant potential. The nose is spicy and complex, with notes of mocha and crushed strawberries. The palate is refined, with elegant, fine-grained tannins. The finish is long. In my opinion, it will be even better in 5 years. Note: Decanting is essential.
