Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.

Review by Mr. STEPHANE R. Posted on January 24, 2013

A 100% Gros Manseng blend. Perfect for a summer meal. A unique, very fresh wine with yellow fruit notes: citrus, lemon, and grapefruit, plus a hint of fresh mint that tantalizes your taste buds...! Delicious and unexpected pairings that highlight local cuisine: "a Landes-style salad: smoked duck breast, pine nuts, and especially very thin slices of red and green apples (Granny Smith) to complement the wine’s sweet and tart notes....! And thank you to Alain Brumont for introducing us to his talent, his beautiful region, and this local grape variety—don’t wait to discover it!!
