Tannat-Merlot is a blend that bridges the gap between two grape varieties emblematic of the vineyards of southwestern France and Bordeaux. The two varieties are blended during the winemaking process to create a complex, balanced wine in the "New World" style, characterized by its full-bodied texture, finesse, and aromas of candied fruit. A must-try!

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
