Rating: Bettane & Desseauve 15/20
Its "creator" likes to say that the Cuvée Torus is to Montus and Bouscassé what ready-to-wear is to haute couture—that is, a simple, popular, elegant, and easy-to-drink wine that nevertheless retains the structure and qualities of a contender. Produced on the terroirs of its famous cousins, it reveals itself as powerful and tannic thanks to the Tannat, while offering beautiful suppleness and savory fruit aromas contributed by the Merlot. A masterful blend of styles...

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Alain Brumont has forged his own distinctive style, sending wines from Madiran across the globe under the Château Montus label, which he acquired in 1980. Often bucking conventional wisdom, Brumont’s vintages showcase his great freedom in interpreting terroirs with yellow and red clay subsoils, varying in composition from 20% to 40%. Tannat is featured in the château’s three cuvées—Prestige, XL, Montus, and La Tyre—and undoubtedly delivers the most spectacular profile of this challenging Pyrenean grape.
