A rosé sold for 2,600 euros at an auction!

Olivier - 25/06/2019

A magnum of Miraval's Muse has been named the "world's most expensive rosé"!

In late May, during a charity event held to benefit Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s GoodPlanet Foundation, a bottle of rosé broke all records. At an auction, it sold for 2,600 euros (for a good cause!). A price that makes it the most expensive rosé in the world. Especially since this isn’t just any wine. It comes from Château Miraval, located in Correns, in the Var region, which owns some thirty hectares of vineyards in Provence. And while this winery is well-known, it’s not just for its production. Its owners have contributed to its fame, as it belongs to two actors—now separated—the famous Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Rosé enthusiasts are already familiar with Château Miraval. But this record is likely to significantly boost its profile among a wider audience and enhance the image of this wine, which many still view as a summer drink of lesser quality than red or white wine. For this vintage, too, it marks the beginning of its rise to fame. Vinified in oval concrete tanks, it was produced in limited quantities—specifically, 2,000 magnums in 2018. Above all, it is a wine with aging potential, considered refined and elegant. But this sale, at this price, also reflects the remarkable evolution of rosé, which enjoys a strong international reputation, particularly in the United States (in fact, the wines of the Miraval Castle (which is no surprise). Nowadays, buyers are willing to pay top dollar for quality bottles, even though this sale is a one-time event and part of a charity fundraiser.

An iconic estate in the Provence region, owned by two big names in the film industry

In recent years, Château Miraval has gained significant recognition, particularly since its acquisition in 2011 by two American stars, actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In fact, it all began in 2008 when they fell in love with the property and signed a three-year lease with an option to purchase. By acquiring the estate in 2011—which spans two appellations (Côtes-de-Provence and Coteaux-Varois-en-Provence)—they became wine producers. However, they decided to entrust production to specialists, and the Perrin family was chosen. In 2012, the Perrin family produced their first vintage. That same year, the estate’s rosé was included in Wine Spectator’s list of the 100 best wines of the year. A major accolade, indeed, which led to a surge in sales. Similarly, thanks to Brad Pitt’s network and his work as an agent, Château Miraval was thrust into the spotlight. In fact, during the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, its wine was served at a reception following the screening of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, in which he stars. Furthermore, the estate announced it would expand its range with the launch of the Studio by Miraval rosé and the famous Muse de Miraval, the star of the auction for Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s GoodPlanet Foundation.
