La Rioja (Argentine)
At an elevation of over 1,100 meters above sea level, the vineyards of the Argentine province of La Riojacover approximately 8,000 hectares and produce grapes with high sugar content and low acidity. Among the varieties grown there is Torrontès, an aromatic white grape variety and distant cousin of Muscat.
La Rioja accounts for about 3.5% of Argentina's vineyards, far behind the regions of San Juan and Mendoza.
This area receives abundant sunlight and experiences significant daily temperature fluctuations. Surrounded by mountain ranges, La Rioja is prone to prolonged periods of drought. As a result, drip irrigation is the predominant method in the region, used to regulate water supply and prevent excessive water stress.
