d'Arenberg
d'Arenberg is one of the most prominent estates in McLaren Vale. Founded in 1912 by Joseph Osborn, the estate was passed down through the generations until d'Arry (Joseph's grandson) arrived in 1959 at the age of 16. He worked alongside his father until the latter's death in 1957. In 1959, d'Arry Osborn decided to launch his own line of wines: d'Arenberg, in honor of his mother, Helena d'Arenberg. He added a red stripe to his labels to evoke his school memories (the red and white uniform tie). Chester Osborn, d'Arry’s son, joined the company in 1984 as cellar master.
d'Arenberg cultivates its vineyard (as well as its suppliers’ vineyards) using sustainable methods: minimal or no irrigation, no fertilizers, and the use of biodynamic preparations and the lunar calendar (with guidance from Biodynamics Australia)... As for its cellar practices, d'Arenberg is the only estate to use a screw press for both white and red wines.
