Lagrange Castle
Château Lagrange is located in the commune of Saint-Julien, in the Bordeaux region. The Château Lagrange vineyard covers 115 hectares in a single block, on two north-south facing gravelly hilltops of Gunzian origin. Sometimes fine, sometimes coarser, these gravelly soils are accompanied by either sand or ferruginous clay.

At an altitude of 24 meters, the center of the estate is the highest point in the Saint-Julien appellation. Château Lagrange's cultivation methods are guided by a desire for perfection and an essential principle: "quantity does not necessarily mean quality." From the choice of clones and rootstocks suited to the soil at Château Lagrange to the numerous tasks carried out in the vineyard, everything contributes to maintaining the most consistent production possible. High planting density, short pruning, thinning in July, and traditional plowing enable this goal to be achieved by producing rich, concentrated grapes. Traditional manual harvesting allows the best bunches to be selected, but above all, it provides an opportunity to eliminate any that are defective, unripe, or damaged.

An extraordinary story

The epic story of Château Lagrange's vineyards began in the 17th century. This unique estate was created through the merger of two territories: Pellecahus and the Lagrange de Monteil family estate. In the 18th century, the wine estate prospered under the leadership of one of the Lagrange family's heirs. But it was in 1855 that Château Lagrange wine officially earned its stripes, establishing itself as a Third Growth. Unfortunately, the centuries that followed heralded an inevitable decline: wars, crises, and fires caused the deterioration of the château's vineyards. But in 1983, a revival began: the Japanese group Suntory bought the vineyards and considerably expanded the estate. Since then, Château Lagrange wines have regained their former prestige.

The strengths of Château Lagrange wine

Located in the commune of Saint-Julien, the Château Lagrange wine estate covers 117 hectares. This vast area is home to three distinct grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Although the estate's harvesters mainly produce red wine, a few hectares are planted with white grape varieties, including Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. Château Lagrange wines are generally considered to have many qualities: refinement, depth, and intensity. In addition, their aging potential is one of the major assets of these wines with their delicately crafted aromas. Wine lovers can expect an elegant color, a balanced palate, and a delicious finish. To achieve such results, the estate's winegrowers rely on the expertise of various oenologists. These experts monitor the grape varieties and define their main characteristics. This attention to detail results in high-quality wines that age to perfection.

Environmentally friendly winegrowing practices

Far from intensive production methods, the winegrowers at Château Lagrange are concerned about environmental issues. Relying on traditional methods, these nature lovers tend their vines according to the vagaries of the land and climate. This is a testament to the winegrowers' constant commitment to sustainable development. This respect for the ecosystem aims to enhance the prestige of the estate. In 2005, Château Lagrange received its first recognition: certified sustainable agriculture. A decade later, the estate earned a second distinction: ISO 14001 certification, proof of its optimal ecological commitment. In addition, the estate uses specific tools to reduce the environmental impact of its services.

What is the basis for Château Lagrange's prestige?

Château Lagrange production guarantees wine lovers high-quality wines, unparalleled aroma development, and responsible, forward-looking practices. Beyond its history, these are the elements that fuel the excellence of this institution today.
