Château Lagrange
Château Lagrange is located in the commune of Saint-Julien, in the Bordeaux region. The Château Lagrange vineyard covers 115 hectares in a single block, spread across two north-south-facing ridges of gravel of "Gunzian" origin. Sometimes fine, sometimes coarser, this gravel is mixed with either sand or iron-rich clay.
At an altitude of 24 meters, the center of the estate is the highest point in the Saint-Julien appellation. Château Lagrange’s viticultural methods are driven by a commitment to perfection and reflect a fundamental principle: “quantity does not necessarily equate to quality.” From the selection of clones and rootstocks suited to the soil of Château Lagrange to the numerous vineyard tasks, everything works together to maintain the most consistent production possible. High planting density, short pruning, thinning in July, and traditional plowing help achieve this goal by producing rich and concentrated grapes. Hand-harvesting, as tradition dictates, allows us to select the best clusters but, above all, provides an opportunity to remove those that are defective, green, or damaged.

An extraordinary story
The history of Château Lagrange’s vineyards dates back to the 17th century. This unique estate was formed through the merger of two estates: that of Pellecahus and that of the Lagrange de Monteil family. In the 18th century, the wine estate flourished under the leadership of one of the Lagrange family’s heirs. But it was in 1855 that Château Lagrange wine officially earned its reputation: it was classified as a Third Growth. Unfortunately, the centuries that followed heralded an inevitable decline: wars, crises, and fires led to the deterioration of the château’s vineyards. But in 1983, a revival began: the Japanese group Suntory purchased the vineyards and significantly expanded the estate. From that point on, Château Lagrange wines regained their former prestige.
The qualities of a Château Lagrange wine
Located in the commune of Saint-Julien, the Château Lagrange vineyard spans 117 hectares. This vast estate features three distinct grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Although the estate’s winemakers primarily produce red wine, a few hectares are dedicated to a white wine vineyard planted with Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. Generally, Château Lagrange wines are praised for their refinement, depth, and intensity. Furthermore, aging potential is one of the major strengths of these wines with their delicately crafted aromas. An elegant color, a balanced palate, and a rich finish await wine enthusiasts. To achieve such results, the estate’s winemakers rely on the expertise of various oenologists. These experts oversee the grape varieties and define their key characteristics. From this attention to detail emerge high-quality wines that age to perfection.
Environmentally friendly winemaking
Far removed from intensive farming practices, the winemakers at Château Lagrange are committed to environmental issues. Drawing on traditional methods, these nature lovers tend their vines in harmony with the whims of the land and the climate. This reflects the winemakers’ ongoing commitment to sustainable development. This respect for the ecosystem aims to enhance the estate’s prestige. In 2005, Château Lagrange received its first recognition: Sustainable Agriculture certification. About a decade later, the estate earned a second distinction: ISO 14001 certification, proof of its optimal ecological commitment. Additionally, the estate uses specialized equipment to minimize the environmental impact of its operations.
What is the basis of Château Lagrange's prestige?
Château Lagrange’s wines guarantee wine lovers exceptional quality, unparalleled aromatic complexity, and a commitment to responsible, forward-thinking practices. Beyond its history, it is these qualities that continue to define the excellence of this institution today.
