Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2024 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About the estate:

Based in Damery, the house gives pride of place to Chardonnay from the Chouilly grand cru, where it owns 10 hectares. Pinot Noir grapes from Bisseuil leave their mark either in the blanc de noirs cuvée or as a complement to Chardonnay in blends, producing beautiful cuvées that develop elegance and refinement. The brut, known as intense, has been redesigned, with reserve wines aged in magnums and corked, bringing more body and complexity. The Frère-Gallienne family (via its holding company, which is a shareholder in the Cheval Blanc estate) has become the majority shareholder in the house.

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

Wine rating (2023 guide) 91/100 (Mag 18)

Rated estate (2023 guide) 2 stars (Successful production)

About the estate:

The Lenoble winery is run by Anne and Antoine Malassagne, the great-granddaughter and grandson of the brand's founder. Production comes from three areas: 10 hectares of Chardonnay in Chouilly on the Côte des Blancs, 6 hectares in Bisseuil near Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and 2.5 hectares in Damery, renowned for its Pinot Meunier grapes and home to the winery. The supply is supplemented by the purchase of grapes. The style is full-bodied and vinous, with an elegant and refreshing finish. A new winemaking process has been introduced for cuvées labeled "mag": part of the reserve wines are stored in magnums sealed with cork, then uncorked and blended with the cuvées, bringing freshness and complexity to the wine.

Rated estate (2024 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

This family estate, founded in Damery in 1920, is embarking on a new chapter with the sale of a majority stake to the Frère-Gallienne family through the FG Bros holding company. This holding company, which is also a shareholder in Château Cheval Blanc, is strengthening its presence in the wine world. The profile and style of the house's champagnes remain unchanged. Antoine Malassagne produces distinguished wines with depth and length. The management of the vines has evolved considerably in recent years and the wines have gained in finesse. The letters MAG followed by a number, which now appear on some of the bottles, indicate the base year of the cuvée, to which reserve wines stored in magnums under cork are added. We wish this fine Champagne house all the best.
