Champagne Thierry Massin - Extra-Brut 4P
2*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
"A rare, single-vineyard Extra-Brut cuvée—original, mineral, and fruity. A superb creation from Thierry Massin."
“A single-vineyard cuvée praised for its originality, liveliness, minerality, and surprising fruitiness. Its secret? In addition to its low dosage, the 2019 harvest—which was both sunny and cool—and the blend of four grape varieties, three of which are rare in Champagne. The blend features three Pinots: Pinot Noir, ubiquitous in the Côte des Bar (55%); Pinot Blanc (24%), significantly rarer; and Pinot Gris (13%), of which only a few rows are grown in Champagne; and finally, a ‘forgotten grape variety,’ Petit Meslier. Complex, delicate, and crisp, the nose blends yellow fruits, exotic fruits, citrus, pine resin, and vegetal notes. This sets the stage for a palate that is all fruit, taut, and long-lasting.” (Le Guide Hachette 2025).

About the wine:
A single-vineyard cuvée praised for its originality, liveliness, minerality, and surprising fruitiness. Its secret? In addition to its low dosage, the 2019 harvest—which was both sunny and cool—and the blend of four grape varieties, three of which are rare in Champagne. The blend combines three Pinots: Pinot Noir, ubiquitous in the Côte des Bar (55%); Pinot Blanc (24%), significantly rarer; and Pinot Gris (13%), of which only a few rows are grown in Champagne; and finally, a “forgotten grape variety,” Petit Meslier. Complex, delicate, and crisp, the nose blends yellow fruits, exotic fruits, citrus, pine resin, and vegetal notes. This sets the stage for a palate that is all fruit, taut, and long-lasting.
About the estate:
A tributary of the Seine, the Arce winds its way through the Côte des Bar (Aube). On its slopes, siblings Thierry and Dominique Massin have been cultivating a vineyard since 1974—a vineyard established during their grandfather’s time—which today covers 12 hectares, 9.5 of which are planted with Pinot Noir. Their respective children, Thibault and Violaine, have joined them.

A lovely surprise for me, as I love Chardonnay—I find this to be a superb, very mineral-driven blend that pairs perfectly with oysters.
