Note: Robert Parker 96/100
“The 2009 Celler Cal Pla Mas d’en Compte is a blend of 50% Grenache (over 100 years old), 40% Carignan, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. An incredible find, offering a deep, violet-black color and flavors of raspberry jam, sweet blueberries, blackcurrant, crushed stone, graphite, and spring flowers. Astonishing richness and intensity, with a magnificent palate and a full-bodied finish, perfectly characterizing this brilliant—if not prodigious—Priorato.” (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)

Given Parker’s glowing reviews, I’m quite disappointed by this Priorato. Admittedly, on the nose, the wine is very pleasant, with aromas of jammy fruit and notes of cinnamon and vanilla. On the other hand, on the palate, the wine’s sweetness overpowers everything else, so much so that it almost feels like drinking a Banylus or a Port. Ultimately, the wine is so dense and sweet that it becomes hard to drink. Parker’s evaluation criteria are definitely unique and full of bias...

It really feels like a luxury vacation here. What genius managed to find something other than gas in the local shale? The very best of Collioure—but on the Spanish side of the border. It’s worth enjoying the finest dishes with the best friends.

A deep, dense, full-bodied wine. Very Spanish, in other words... The value for the price is undeniable. That said, it’s a matter of style, and I’m not surprised that Parker gave it 96 points. In my opinion, that’s too high, but to each his own. It remains, nonetheless, a remarkable wine.
