Rating: Robert Parker 96/100
“The 2009 Celler Cal Pla Mas d'en Compte is a blend of 50% Grenache (over 100 years old), 40% Carignan, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. An incredible find, offering a deep purple-black color and flavors of raspberry jam, sweet blueberry, blackcurrant, crushed stone, graphite, and spring flowers. Astonishing richness and intensity with a magnificent palate and a full-bodied finish, which perfectly characterize this brilliant, if not prodigious, Priorato.” (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)

Compared to Parker’s glowing reviews, I’m quite disappointed by this Priorato. Admittedly, on the nose, the wine is very pleasant, with aromas of jammy fruit and hints of cinnamon and vanilla. On the palate, however, the wine’s sweetness overpowers everything else, to the point where it almost feels like drinking a Banyuls or a Port. Ultimately, the wine is so dense and sweet that it becomes hard to digest. Clearly, Parker’s evaluation criteria are unique and full of bias...

Here, you get a real sense of a luxury vacation. What genius managed to find something other than gas in the local shale? The excellence of Collioure, but on the Spanish side of the border. It’s worth savoring the finest dishes with the best of friends.

A deep, dense, robust wine. Very Spanish, in other words... The value for money is undeniable. That said, it’s a matter of style, and I’m not surprised that Parker gave it 96 points. In my opinion, that’s too high, but to each his own. It remains, nonetheless, a remarkable wine.

Wonderful! Round, fruity, powerful, elegant, and full of character. Notes of very ripe fruit, lovely length—this wine is pure joy!
