Moscato d'Asti
The Moscato d'Asti Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) is an Italian designation from the Piedmont region, recognized since November 14, 1977. This typical Piedmontese wine was already being produced in these two areas as early as 1200. Only white wines harvested within the production area defined by the decree are eligible for DOCG status. The authorized Moscato d'Asti vineyards are located in the provinces of Cuneo, Alessandria, and Asti.
The area planted with White Muscat vines used to produce Moscato d'Asti wine is approximately 10,000 hectares, shared among more than 6,800 winegrowers. The production area for Moscato d’Asti wines is situated on the slopes of the hills to the right of the Tanaro River in Monferrato and the Langhe. The minimum total alcohol content by volume is 11%, of which 4.5% to 6.5% is alcohol contained in the wine. The wine therefore still contains sugar. Moscato d'Asti white wines form the base for Asti Spumante sparkling wine. They feature a straw-yellow color of varying intensity and exhibit the characteristic, pronounced yet delicate aromas of Muscat. Within the Moscato d'Asti appellation, the wines produced by the Scagliola brothers are particularly noteworthy for their quality.
