Muscadet
The Muscadet AOP covers a large area around Nantes and was created in 1937. The appellation is unique in that it takes its name from the grape variety rather than the geographical or historical region. The name dates back to the Middle Ages and is reminiscent of Muscat wines from Cyprus.
Muscadet thrives in an oceanic climate characterized by low annual temperature variations and generous summer sunshine. The vines are exposed to sea winds, which encourages early vegetation growth. The terroirs ofthe Muscadet AOP offer great diversity, with igneous and metamorphic rocks such as granite, gneiss, mica schist, and gabbro, as well as clay and sandy soils rich in pebbles.
The star grape variety ofthe Muscadet AOP is Melon de Bourgogne, whose early ripening and resistance to cold make it an ideal choice for the region.
