Commandaria
Writings have been found that describe the geographical boundaries of the Commandaria, formerly known as Nama, dating back to 800 BC! It is certainly one of the world’s earliest appellations, predating the very concept itself. The AOC designation was not officially recognized until 1993.

Known at the time as Nama, the Knights Templar discovered this nectar during their crusades and renamed it Commandaria in the early 12th century. Commandaria was celebrated in the finest European courts, just as South Africa’s legendary Klein Constantia was in the 18th century. It was notably served at the wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre.
In the 13th century, Commandaria topped the list in the first wine ranking, *La Bataille des vins*, organized by Philip Augustus, King of France.

Produced in the Troodos Mountains, Commandaria is made from the white Xynisteri grape and/or the red Mavro grape.
Commandaria is a sweet wine made by drying the grapes and then fortifying them with brandy to reach an alcohol content of 15%.
