"A remarkable length of dried fruit notes imparted by the rancio (Hachette)"

“Aged for several years (more than 5 years for the ‘Hors d’âge’ designation) in an oxidative environment using the solera method—where older wine ‘matures’ the younger wines—this Grenache presents a very dark mahogany-brick color. The nose is superb: roasted notes, spices, dried figs, a waxy note from the old casks, and dried fruits characteristic of rancio. Continuing this theme and adding notes of coffee and nuts, the palate is powerful, rich, velvety, full-bodied, and well-supported by a fresh hint of volatility, with the added bonus of a remarkable finish of dried fruit imparted by the rancio.” (Le Guide Hachette 2025)

About the wine:

Aged for several years (more than 5 years for the “Hors d’âge” designation) in an oxidative environment using the solera method—where older wine “matures” the younger wines—this Grenache displays a very dark mahogany-brown hue. The nose is superb: roasted notes, spices, dried figs, a waxy note from the old casks, and dried fruit from the rancio. Continuing this profile and adding notes of coffee and nuts, the palate is powerful, rich, velvety, full-bodied, and well-supported by a fresh hint of volatility, with the added bonus of a remarkable finish featuring dried fruit notes imparted by the rancio.

About the estate:

The village of Cases-de-Pène takes its name from a 10th-century hermitage built on a limestone rock (pena in Catalan) that closes off the Agly Valley. The black schist soils alternate with the ochre-colored clay-limestone soils, forming two superb terroirs where the twenty or so winegrowers of the local cooperative—founded in 1942 and representing 280 hectares of vineyards—carry out their work.
