Saint-Mont
The origins of the Saint-Mont vineyard date back to 1050, when the Benedictine monks founded the Monastery of Saint-Mont. Indeed, this vineyard is located at a crossroads along the Way of St. James, which many pilgrims traveled, helping to establish the reputation of Saint-Mont wines.
Over time, the winemakers dedicated themselves to developing the vineyard and, in 1957, decided to create the “Côtes de Saint-Mont” winegrowers’ association. To achieve this, they selected the best plots in the vineyard to reduce the production area—aiming to produce less but of higher quality—and replanted forgotten grape varieties while optimizing winemaking methods. This is how the 1,200 hectares of the Saint-Mont appellation obtained their AOC designation in 2011.
The soils of the Saint-Mont appellation consist of light brown sands, compact and mottled clays, and calcareous clays, on which Tannat, Pinenc, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted for the reds, and Gros Manseng, Petit Courbu, and Arrufiac for the whites.
