On the road to Munster, the granite-rich hillsides of Wihr-au-Val mark the outer limits of the vineyard—an area that Henri Schoenheitz knows down to the slightest variation in slope. A history buff, you simply must listen to him recount the region’s major events while savoring the fine wines from his terroirs of Herrenreben, Holder, and Linsenberg.

About the estate:
Wihr-au-Val is the last wine-growing village as you travel up the Munster Valley. Its south-facing slopes had fallen into disrepair after 1945. In the 1970s, Henri Schoenheitz began replanting them. His son, also named Henri, is continuing his father’s work. He sold his first bottles in 1980 and today runs a charming estate covering nearly 16 hectares.

Our favorites are the Rieslings, which are always well-balanced, like the Herrenreben.
About the estate:
Located in the Munster Valley, in Wihr-au-Val, this family-owned estate does not own vineyards in the most prestigious Grand Cru appellations, but brilliantly cultivates lovely hillside vineyards. Though somewhat off the Wine Route, this estate is well represented among high-quality local restaurants. Prices remain quite attractive.

About the wine:
This is one of three Rieslings from the Schoenheitz vineyard. It has a lovely aroma of white flowers and fruit buds. The acidity and lively texture balance the semi-dry flavors. Green apple adds freshness to this wine.
