Pikes
The patriarch of the Pike family, Henry Pike, arrived in South Australia in 1878. Settling in the Adelaide Hills, he founded a brewery in 1886 called H. Pike & Co. The brewery was sold in 1972, but the family tradition lives on: Henry Pike's great-grandson, Edgar Walter Pike, is well established in the local wine industry as a winemaker for a large wine estate. His children, Andrew and Neil Pike, are also involved in the industry, one with a degree in viticulture and the other in oenology. In 1984, they founded Pikes Wines in the Polish River Hills area in the heart of Clare Valley. The first Pikes Wines were bottled in 1985.
Pikes Wines owns a 75-hectare vineyard, planted between 1894 and 2003. With a view to sustainable development, in 2001, Pikes Wines implemented a process for recycling solids (pomace, stems, lees, etc.) into compost, treating wastewater, and more. This philosophy is also applied in the vineyard, which is managed in a sustainable manner: minimal use of chemicals in the vineyard, preference for organic treatments, development of the surrounding flora, etc.
Pikes Wines produces a complete range of single-varietal red and white wines (Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viognier, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, etc.) as well as a premium range called Reserve.
