“‘Lively and flavorful’ (Suckling)”

"Power, harmony, length... Gilles Gelin has crafted an exceptional Fleurie here, remarkable for its intensity both on the palate and on the nose. This cuvée immediately reveals generous notes of flowers and red fruits, enhanced by spices. On the palate, one discovers a full-bodied, rich texture with impeccable balance, supported throughout the finish by tannins that are distinctly present yet very fine-grained and should soften quickly.” (Le Guide Hachette 2026)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2020 guide): 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous vintage)

About the estate:

Gilles Gelin is part of a new generation of Beaujolais winemakers who produce a substantial volume of wines of impeccable quality. In the 2016 vintage, we noticed a shift in the wines’ style, becoming more delicate, with a more refined aromatic profile. This style is confirmed in 2017. The wines are medium-bodied, with just the right balance. They’re reliable and a pleasure to drink. What more could you ask for?

Gault & Millau Wine Guide

Guide des Vins Gault & Millau

3-star rated estate (High-quality production)

About the estate:

The son and grandson of winemakers, Gérard Gelin acquired Clos des Nugues in 1976, before going into partnership with his son Gilles. Located in northern Beaujolais, on the border of the Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, and Morgon appellations, the estate now covers nearly 30 hectares. The average age of the vines is around 45 years, with some Gamay vines even over a century old.

Rated estate (2020 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the estate:

Located at the crossroads of the wine regions, the Gelin family primarily produces Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages wines. A few plots in Morgon (1 hectare) and Fleurie (6 hectares) round out a range that spans from VDF to homemade crème de cassis. The wines resemble their creator, Gilles Gelin: rich in color with fruity tannins, they reveal their character over time. His white is a reliable Chardonnay in Beaujolais-Villages, which he continues to plant on suitable land. His Gamay version showcases the excellence of the Lancié terroir when cultivated with controlled yields.

About the wine:

Purple in color, this wine offers subtle aromas of black plum and black olive that complement notes of red cherry. On the palate, it is more reserved, revealing crisp, linear flavors of black fruit that linger in the long finish.
