Rating from the Hachette Wine Guide: 3*** (Exceptional Wine) + Editor’s Choice
“An exceptional Côte du Py, produced from a 3-hectare plot planted with fifty-year-old vines, harvested late (on September 28) to ensure the grapes were as ripe as possible. Behind an intense purple color lies a delectable and refined bouquet of sweet spices and black fruits. The palate is magnificent, at once robust and smooth, rich and long, supported by fine, silky tannins that lend it great elegance. A noble Morgon, to be served with capon this winter or in three years’ time—and even longer. ” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2014)

About the estate:

Owned by the Lafont family for several generations, this estate perched on the Bel-Air hill overlooks the Ardières Valley: blue granite buildings constructed in 1849, vaulted cellars, and a 23-hectare vineyard with plots across five crus. At the helm since 1985, Jean-Marc Lafont has established a wine trading company bearing his name to round out his portfolio.

A Côte de Py with good bite but a well-integrated structure. It’s both charming and elegant.

I tasted it with a platter of cold cuts and found it to be perfectly balanced, with pronounced red fruit notes and a lively mouthfeel.
