2*Coup de Coeur

Hachette

“Already featured in the 2018 edition with an excellent rating, Olivier Depardon returns with a Régnié full of charm and harmony. To achieve this, he destemmed his grapes and then aged the wine briefly in tanks. The aromatic profile reveals intense notes of well-ripened red and black fruits, with a hint of spice as a bonus. The palate, equally rich in fruit, is full-bodied, round, and long, supported by silky, refined tannins.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019) A true delight!

About the wine:

Having already been featured in the 2018 edition—where he earned an outstanding star—Olivier Depardon returns with a Régnié full of charm and harmony. To achieve this, he destemmed his grapes and then aged the wine briefly in tanks. The aromatic profile reveals intense notes of ripe red and black fruits, with a hint of spice to top it off. The palate, equally rich in fruit, is full-bodied, round, and long, supported by silky, refined tannins.

About the estate:

Well known to readers of this guide, this estate was founded in 1848. Olivier Depardon (seventh generation), who has been at the helm since 1985 and is now joined by his son Alexis, produces Morgon, Régnié, and Beaujolais-Villages wines from his 26.5 ha of vineyards.

Tasted in November 2019. A slight effervescence on the palate that’s surprising but not unpleasant. A nose of crisp fruit. Supple and fleeting on the palate. A wine to enjoy; for me, Régnié doesn’t measure up to the other Beaujolais AOCs.

Lacks fruit and freshness. Needs to open up, but is pleasant.

A beautiful purple color; a lovely, intense yet fresh nose of black fruit; the palate is tight, relatively intense as well, but fairly short, and relatively tannic. A fine expression of Gamay.

Review by Mr. ANDRE C. Published on 12/16/2018

A deep, episcopal purple color; small crystals visible in the glass (tartaric acid?), a lovely, fruity yet subtle nose that, upon aeration, develops a very slight acetic note. On the palate, it has nice acidity and fruit, but the tannins are harsh and the astringency is formidable. Did the winemaker intend to produce a wine for aging? For now, it’s not a very pleasant wine.

Review by Mr. JULIEN V. Published on 12/10/2018

A lovely, fairly deep ruby color for a Gamay. A nice attack of red fruit, supported by a well-controlled bitterness. The finish is pleasant. I like the balance and the value for the price.
