In 1990, the Crémant de Bordeaux AOC was established at a time when sparkling wines were beginning to gain popularity. Since then, sales have continued to rise. An average of 7.5 million bottles of white (made from Sauvignon and Sémillon grapes) and rosé (made from Merlot and Cabernet grapes) are sold annually, produced by 200 winemakers. Crémants de Bordeaux offer an alternative to Champagne, with a fresh, full-bodied, and rich style featuring notes of citrus and white flowers.
