“Full of punch and wonderfully fresh—this magnificent Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel ~ Vinous”
“Awarded the title of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2020, this wine is a beautifully crafted Haut-Médoc, elegant with its clear, brilliant color. While the nose is rather subtle, the palate is more expressive, opening with blackcurrant, spices, and toasty notes, supported by good freshness and well-integrated tannins. About the estate:
In recent years, this small estate in the southern Médoc has established itself as a reliable choice. The wines here have shown unfailing consistency over the past few vintages. Vinous
Wine rated (2022 guide) 90/100
About the wine:
Belle-Vue 2020 is a magnificent Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Notes of dark plum, gravel, clove, menthol, and licorice create a sense of intensity. This 2020 has punch, but it also offers excellent freshness to balance it all out. 2024–2036
James Suckling
Wine rated (2023 guide) 92/100
About the wine:
The nose features notes of blackcurrant and cherry, along with hints of baking spices and gravel. The medium- to full-bodied palate is tightly structured, with dense, chalky tannins that will need some time to soften and fully integrate. The finish is mineral. Best enjoyed starting in 2025.
Yves Beck
Wine rated (2022 guide) 93/100
About the wine:
Belle-Vue lives up to the high standards set during the en primeur tasting. It offers a rich array of flavors and aromas. The bouquet reveals notes of wild berries and Sichuan pepper, complemented by a hint of tea leaves. Delicious and juicy, the wine features fleshy tannins that provide a perfect foundation alongside its acidic structure. The whole still needs to come together, but the path is clear, and it’s a safe bet that this wine is far from having said its last word! 2026–2045
Vert de Vin
Wine rated (2023 guide) 93-94/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)
About the wine:
The wine has a deep ruby color. The nose is elegant, with subtle spicy and woody notes, plenty of freshness, and concentrated fruit. It initially reveals a pronounced minty note, followed by aromas of licorice, nutmeg, cloves, crushed coriander seeds, toasted vanilla, and chocolate. There are also rich, juicy fruit notes: wild strawberry, morello cherry, roasted red cherry, redcurrant jelly, fresh blackcurrant, blueberry, wild plum, as well as a fragrant floral bouquet (violet, cornflower, lily) and a hint of roasted notes (toasted hazelnut). The palate is rich and enveloping, with a slight sweetness, while remaining fresh and refined. It expresses flavors of wild strawberry, creamy blackcurrant, roasted red cherry, fresh morello cherry, and raspberry coulis, as well as mint chocolate, licorice, clove, toasted vanilla, coriander seeds, violet, blueberry, and lily. There is also a subtle hint of blackcurrant leaf that adds a lovely freshness to the bouquet. The tannins are structured yet silky and savory. Beautiful crisp acidity and a lingering, indulgent finish. A generous yet refined and elegant wine.

Here’s a fine Médoc that’s easy to drink, with well-integrated tannins. I really enjoyed it with a gently roasted stuffed pheasant.

Review by Mr. GILLES D. Published on April 9, 2025
A classic Cru Bourgeois that reaffirms its status in the accomplished 2020 vintage. Beautifully crafted, Belle-Vue offers a fine balance between the richness of its aromatic palette of ripe black fruits accompanied by sweet spices and a subtle woody note, and the freshness of its lovely, dense, and structuring mineral backbone. The polished, velvety tannins reinforce the persistence of the flavor-rich finish. One of the best value-for-money wines in the appellation. Already approachable now, it offers a long drinking window extending up to ten years. With such a profile—both powerful and elegant—this fine wine will be reserved for the family Easter meal featuring a traditional oven-roasted leg of Limousin lamb. Score = 4.1.
