Haut-Médoc
Haut-Médoc is the Médoc region closest to Bordeaux. In 1855, wine merchants and professionals drew up a classification of the Médoc's finest wines, establishing a hierarchical list of Grands Crus Classés. This updated list is still in force, and distinguishes 62 prestigious châteaux. Recognized as an AOC by a decree dated November 14, 1936, it comprises 25 communes. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives on the well-drained terraces of gravelly alluvium, while Merlot thrives on the deeper, more clayey soils. The surface area of planted vines that can lay claim to the Haut-Médoc appellation is almost 4,600 hectares.

Mainly made up of layers of Garonne gravel, the Haut-Médoc territory is best known for its extreme diversity of soils, combining limestone, clay and sand. The aromatic complexity of Haut-Médoc wines reveals superb aromas of red and black fruits, licorice and sometimes a touch of menthol or spice. Aged in oak barrels, they present an elegant and very pleasant woodiness. As they age, they develop beautiful bouquets offering a delicious festival of animal touches (leather, fur), roasted notes (mocha), prune, cedar, truffle... These are lively, brilliant, generous and powerful wines, but without excess. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend. It is combined with Merlot. Petit Verdot and, to a lesser extent, Malbec are often added.

Haut-Médoc is an appellation brimming with quality estates, including Château Cantemerle, Château La Tour Carnet, Château La Lagune and Château Sociando-Mallet.
