Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated 14.5/20 (Good wine)

Rated 2 stars (A solid, recommendable wine, though slightly more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the wine:

A vintage with a delicate, elegant character—a rarity for this estate, which typically produces robust wines.

About the estate:

Patrice Pagès skillfully manages a single vineyard of about 40 hectares, planted on slightly clayey gravel soil. The wines are generally austere and reserved in their youth but gain elegance over the years.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Wine rated (2014 guide) Mentioned (Successful wine)

Rated estate Award-winning wines (This producer's wines regularly receive awards from the guide)

About the wine:

As is often the case, this vintage offers a wine that calls for aging to integrate the still very prominent oak—the bouquet blends intense toasted and smoky notes with red and black fruits—and to “round out” a powerful, tannic palate. The significant presence of Cabernets (47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) undoubtedly contributes to this robust, full-bodied profile. A wine with character, best enjoyed after at least three to five years of aging.

About the estate:

This estate, founded in the 18th century, took on its current name in 1843, when Maître Dupré, a solicitor at the Bordeaux Court of Appeal, purchased the property. Covering 43 hectares of beautiful Pyrenean gravel soil, it has been owned by the Pagès family since 1970.

Wine rated (2015 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Selected Estates (Please note that this guide is a ranking, and as such, all the estates listed here—even those without a star—represent, in our view, the pinnacle of French winemaking.)

About the wine:

The 2010 vintage is juicy and delicious—a real success.

About the estate:

The Fourcas-Dupré vineyard is planted in a single block on a beautiful gravelly hill. The estate, expertly managed by Patrice Pagès—now supported by his brother Ghislain—produces a classic Listrac: firm, somewhat austere, sincere, and impeccably straightforward in expression. While the wines take time to develop, they retain their qualities over time, and prices remain reasonable. A new, more modern approach to winemaking is underway, and the latest vintages are promising.

About the wine:

A firm, concentrated, and dry wine. At first, it reveals only its structure, then the sweet, juicy plum comes through.
