Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Patrice Pagès skillfully manages a contiguous estate of about 40 hectares, planted on slightly clayey gravel soil. The wines are generally austere and reserved in their youth but gain elegance over the years.

Decanter

Decanter

Wine rated (2020 guide) 91/100

About wine:

A bit more austere than expected when it was first released, but it has character and is a subtle Listrac with plenty of confident black fruit and blackberry notes.

Hachette Wine Guide

Guide Hachette des vins

Rated estate Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About the estate:

This estate, founded in the 18th century, took on its current name in 1843, when Maître Dupré, a solicitor at the Bordeaux Court of Appeal, purchased the property. Covering 43 hectares on a beautiful terroir of Pyrenean gravel, it has been owned by the Pagès family since 1970.

Rated estate Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

The Fourcas-Dupré vineyard is planted in a single block on a beautiful gravelly hill. The estate, expertly managed by Patrice Pagès—now assisted by his brother Ghislain—produces a classic Listrac: firm, somewhat austere, sincere, and impeccably straightforward in expression. While the wines take time to develop, they retain their qualities over time, and prices remain reasonable. A new, more modern approach to winemaking is underway, and the latest vintages are promising.

James Suckling

James Suckling

Wine rated (2021 guide) 90/100

About wine:

Fresh redcurrants and berries on the nose. It is medium-bodied with supple, elegant tannins. Juicy and fresh.

Wine Green

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2021 guide) 90/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About wine:

The nose is floral and intense. It features notes of violet, blackberry, and lilac, combined with hints of blackcurrant and wild strawberry, as well as touches of licorice, vanilla, and toast, along with subtle hints of cubeb pepper and a barely perceptible salty note. The palate is fruity, offering minerality, freshness, a certain smoothness, and a lively acidity. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fresh, juicy raspberry and crisp cherry, along with lighter hints of violet and rose, combined with touches of refined minerality, lilac, cardamom, and almond, and a subtle hint of chocolate. The tannins are well-integrated.
