"So wonderful on the nose with beautiful fresh flowers like violets, aromas of black olives and black berries. Archetypal Pomerol nose. Full-bodied, but at the same time so refined and structured. Magnificent tannic tension and concentration. Vibrant finish. Shows energy and concentration. Try after 2024. " (James Suckling 2019). Very limited quantities !

Wine rating (2018 guide) 18.5/20 (Wine of exceptional quality)

4-star estate (Producers of very high quality, the pride of French vineyards)

About wine:

A measured wine that has retained balanced fruit and a superbly creamy density from start to finish. Hints of violet mark a lively, fresh finish. Drink between 2021 and 2037.

About the estate:

Facing Cheval Blanc on the legendary Pomerol plateau, L'Évangile has some strong points in its favor: its 19 hectares are planted on deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand. The owner, Baron Éric de Rothschild, has equipped his Pomerol estate with technical facilities that match the potential and reputation of this château. Small vats make it easier to monitor the harvest and refine the blends. The vineyard restoration plan, which involves grubbing up vines and replanting, is continuing. It will take at least ten years for this wine to reach its full potential. L'Évangile seduces with its great vitality, generous truffle bouquet, and velvety texture of great refinement, with an elegant dimension without overpowering strength. This Pomerol heavyweight has reached a new level of quality since 2004 and has produced superb vintages since 2009. The more supple second wine, Le Blason, offers an accessible introduction to the pleasures of Pomerol without breaking the bank. 2018 promises to be exceptional!

About wine:

For me, this wine will be just as great as the 1989, and it is a worthy successor to the 2015. It is tight and reserved on the nose, with a powerful Pomerol Merlot in the background. On the palate, the raspberries and blackberries have a creamy quality. The power and intensity promise an incredible future. The texture is smooth and silky, showing great freshness balanced by ripe fruit and seductive tannins. A serious wine. Drinking window: 2024-2040

Wine rating (2020 guide) 3*Coup de Coeur (Exceptional wine)

Rated estate (2022 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly recognized by the guide)

About wine:

This deep garnet-colored Pomerol exudes great sensuality, with a bouquet reminiscent of very ripe red and black fruits and spices. The tannins are so silky and the freshness so pertinent that an impression of smoothness prevails on the palate. Yet the substance is indeed dense and full-bodied, powerful even on the finish, structured to stand the test of time.

About the estate:

Born in the mid-18th century, when it was known as Fazilleau, the vineyard was renamed L'Évangile in the early 19th century. At that time, it covered 13 hectares, an area close to its current size (15 hectares). The first turning point in its history came during the Second Empire when it was purchased by Paul Chaperon, who built the château and quickly established its reputation by exploiting the qualities of a terroir that is both distinctive and well-balanced, with very pure clay, sand and gravel soils on a subsoil rich in iron oxide. L'Évangile was sold to the Rothschilds in 1990, marking the second major turning point for this cru, which then benefited from significant investment and the expertise of its director Charles Chevallier, who handed over the reins to Éric Kohler in 2015.

Rated Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)

About wine:

The 2016 Evangile has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with notes of plum jam, Black Forest cake, red cherry compote, and raspberries with hints of menthol, chocolate box, licorice, and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, the palate presents incredibly ripe and velvety tannins and a beautiful freshness, enhancing the generous and brilliantly fruity mid-palate. Lots of energy on the very persistent mineral finish.

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2 stars (These very large estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, deserve a place in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the estate:

Ideally located between Pétrus and Cheval Blanc, L’Évangile, which is majority-owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), has undergone extensive restructuring and a takeover of the vineyard in recent years, including the acquisition of new plots. The results of this important work carried out by Jean-Pascal Vazart and his team are evident in the quality of the wines, and the latest vintages produced place the estate at the highest level of the appellation. 2018, a challenging year from a cultivation perspective, marked the transition of the vineyard to organic farming.

Vert de Vin

Wine rated (2018 guide) 97-98/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About wine:

The nose is fruity, elegant, distinguished, and offers a lovely definition and finesse. There are notes of fleshy blackberry and blackcurrant combined with hints of fleshy raspberry, small blue fruits, ripe/crushed redcurrants, as well as subtle hints of racy minerality, toast/caramelization and discreet hints of tonka bean and coffee (in the background). The palate is fruity, balanced, beautifully elegant, velvety, delicious, very discreetly tight and offers a very nice texture, depth, a nice definition, an airy side, a beautiful finesse and tension. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry, fleshy blueberry/blue fruits and, more subtly, strawberry, combined with delicate hints of crushed raspberry, racy minerality, hints of chocolate, toasted/caramelized notes, subtle hints of spice and very subtle hints of almond. The tannins are elegant and very finely mellow. Good length. Beautiful persistence with hints of chocolate. Keep it!

Wine rated (2019 guide) 98/100

About wine:

First, you notice the spicy and floral aromas before moving on to notes of mocha, truffle, and juicy plums. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, everything is perfect. The wine has layers of depth, waves of silky, pure and opulent fruit, and a standout finish thanks to all the decadent fruit. The wine is fresh, elegant, long and incredibly rich, as well as tannic. It needs to be cellared for 12 years before opening.
